Tennessee House Democrats decided the best way to fight a redistricting vote was to lock arms on the chamber floor, block the aisles, shove state troopers, and hand out earplugs like party favors — and now every single one of them has been stripped of every single committee assignment. House Speaker Cameron Sexton dropped the hammer on May 12, sending a letter to Democratic Leader Karen Camper informing her that the entire caucus was done serving on standing committees, effective immediately.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Except these geniuses somehow thought they'd win.
Here's what happened. On May 6, Tennessee Republicans released a new congressional map — one that, as RedState reported, eliminates the state's sole Democratic congressional district. The Supreme Court had already ruled that racial gerrymandering was unconstitutional, and the GOP drew lines accordingly. Democrats, naturally, responded with the calm dignity we've come to expect from them. Just kidding. On May 7, they turned the House floor into a daycare center.
State Rep. Justin Pearson of Memphis — you might remember him from the "Tennessee Three" saga back in 2023 — took to social media to announce the consequences. "Speaker of the TN House Cameron Sexton just removed me and every Democrat from any committee we served on," Pearson posted. Buddy, you earned it.
Sexton's letter laid out the charges in detail, and they read like a rap sheet for a frat party gone wrong. Interlocking arms in the House well. Blocking aisles on the House floor. Encouraging disruptions from gallery protesters. Using "prohibited props and noisemakers." Distributing earplugs to fellow Democratic lawmakers — presumably so they wouldn't have to hear themselves losing. The Speaker cited a "flagrant disregard" for House rules, which is putting it politely.
Governor Bill Lee signed the new map into law the same day the tantrum happened, May 7, because adults were still running the building. The redistricting is done. The vote happened. The law is signed. And the Democrats who screamed about it now have zero committee influence to show for their trouble.
Let's appreciate the pattern here, because it's beautiful. Back in 2023, the Tennessee Three disrupted proceedings with a bullhorn, got expelled (well, two of them did), and the national media turned them into progressive martyrs. Hollywood called. Kamala called. It was a whole thing. So naturally, the entire Democratic caucus looked at that playbook and said, "Let's run it back, but bigger."
Except this time, the GOP didn't flinch, didn't negotiate, and didn't give the cameras a dramatic expulsion vote to fundraise off of. They just quietly removed every Democrat from every committee. No martyrdom. No CNN specials. Just consequences.
That's not a slap on the wrist. That's an eviction notice. The Tennessee Democratic caucus now has all the legislative influence of the guy who stands outside the Capitol with a megaphone. Actually, less — that guy at least gets to pick his own corner.
