Parents Locked Their Kids Inside for Four Years Over COVID — A Jury Just Called It What It Was: Child Abuse

A 53-year-old German man and his 48-year-old German-American wife have been sentenced to two years and ten months in prison each after keeping their three children locked inside their home in Oviedo, Spain from December 2021 to April 2025 — all because they were terrified of COVID. A Spanish court convicted them of habitual familial psychological abuse and family abandonment, and honestly, it's about time somebody said the quiet part out loud: COVID hysteria was always a spectrum, and these people rode it straight off the cliff.

Remember when we were the crazy ones for wanting kids to go back to school? Funny how that works.

The children — two nine-year-old twins and an eleven-year-old boy — were found wearing diapers despite their ages, unable to read or write, and surrounded by trash and feces. The parents made them wear up to three masks each at all times. Three. Masks. On children who hadn't seen sunlight in years. According to reporting from Louder with Crowder, the case has been dubbed the "Oviedo Horror House" across Spanish media, and that name barely scratches the surface.

Prosecutors originally sought a 25-year sentence but settled for the lesser charges after the couple was acquitted of unlawful detention. Let that sink in — locking your kids inside for nearly four years doesn't qualify as "unlawful detention" in Spain, apparently. The court did, however, bar both parents from exercising any parental authority or custody for three years and four months after their sentence and prohibited them from approaching minors.

Here's the detail that should haunt every COVID scold who spent 2020 and 2021 lecturing the rest of us about "following the science." When those children finally stepped outside for the first time, a reporter from Cope radio station described what happened: "The first thing the children did when they went outside was breathe in the fresh air and lie down on the ground to touch the grass." Kids so deprived of the outside world that grass was a revelation.

The mother's defense lawyer tried to frame the whole thing as "voluntary isolation" stemming from "extravagant or unorthodox" parenting. Extravagant. That's one word for trapping children in a filth-covered apartment because you watched too much CNN International. Another word is abuse, which is what the jury called it.

Now look, nobody's saying every parent who kept their kids home during the first few weeks of lockdown was a monster. We all remember the uncertainty. But there's a Grand Canyon-sized difference between being cautious for a month and building a hermetically sealed prison for your own children that lasted until 2025. COVID was over. The world moved on. These parents didn't.

And that's the real story here. This wasn't just two lunatics in Spain. This was the logical endpoint of the fear machine that our own government, our own media, and our own "public health experts" built and fed for years. They told parents that sending kids to school was murder. They told families that fresh air was dangerous. They masked toddlers. They closed playgrounds. And when a couple in Oviedo took those instructions to their absolute conclusion, the same system had to turn around and prosecute them for it.

Two years and ten months. For stealing four years of childhood. Those kids can't read. They can't write. They wore diapers at nine years old. And the people who created the climate of fear that made this possible will never spend a single day answering for it.

But at least a jury in Spain had the guts to call it what it was.
