New Congressional Map Shows Republicans Taking Huge Majority in 2026 Midterms — And Democrats Did It to Themselves

A new congressional projection map is making the rounds on social media, and if you're a Democrat strategist, you might want to sit down for this one. After the Virginia Supreme Court nuked the left's gerrymandering scheme in a 4-3 ruling on May 8, updated models now show Republicans cruising to a massive 280-156 House majority — with zero tossup seats.

That's a 124-seat gap. Let that marinate for a second.

Conservative commentator Eric Daugherty shared the projection map showing what happens when you draw compact, population-based district boundaries instead of letting Democrat politicians carve up neighborhoods like a Thanksgiving turkey. The map went viral almost immediately, and for good reason — it's the kind of thing that makes Chuck Schumer's eye twitch.

Here's the backstory. Virginia Democrats, led by House Speaker Don Scott, rammed through a constitutional amendment to bypass the bipartisan redistricting commission that voters approved back in 2020. They held a special election in April 2026 where the referendum passed 52% to 48%, with over 3 million ballots cast and tens of millions spent on advertising. The state appropriated $5 million just to hold the vote. The new maps would have handed Democrats up to 4 additional House seats in Virginia alone, turning a current 6-5 Democratic edge into a near-sweep of 10 out of 11 districts.

There was just one tiny problem. They broke the law doing it.

Justice Arthur Kelsey, writing for the majority, didn't mince words. The court found that the legislature violated Virginia's constitutional requirement for an "intervening election" between legislative votes on amendments. Republicans argued that Democrats pushed the amendment through while early voting was already underway for the 2025 statewide elections — meaning voters never got the constitutionally required chance to weigh in on the legislators who approved it. The court agreed, ruling that "this violation irreparably undermines the integrity of the resulting referendum vote and renders it null and void."

Boom. Gone. All of it.

Now here's where it gets really fun. Before the Virginia ruling, Republicans already led Democrats by roughly 3 seats through mid-decade redistricting efforts across multiple states. With Virginia's 4 seats yanked back, the GOP advantage has ballooned to approximately 10 seats. Republicans currently hold 217 House seats to Democrats' 212 — and the maps haven't even finished being redrawn in states like South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama.

President Trump praised the decision on Truth Social, because of course he did. The man who kicked off the unprecedented mid-decade redistricting push is watching it pay dividends in real time.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, meanwhile, called the ruling "an unprecedented and undemocratic action" — which is rich coming from the party that spent $5 million of taxpayer money on a special election specifically designed to gerrymander themselves into permanent power.

We voted for a bipartisan redistricting commission in 2020. Democrats decided that was inconvenient. The Virginia Supreme Court decided the Constitution still matters. And now the projection maps look like a red tidal wave.

Elections have consequences. So does trying to rig them.
