Leaked Documents Show Germany Ordering Social Media to Push State Propaganda and Crush Dissent — But WE'RE the Authoritarians

Leaked documents reveal that Germany's government media authorities have been working on a plan to force social media platforms to algorithmically boost state-approved messaging while burying opposition voices. Not allegations. Not conspiracy theories. Leaked documents, in black and white, showing a Western democracy building a censorship machine that would make Beijing blush.

But remember, folks — it's Trump who's the "threat to democracy."

The proposal is called the Digital Media State Treaty, and it's being pushed by Landesmedienanstalten, Germany's network of state media authorities. The man leading the charge is Thorsten Schmiege, president of Bavaria's media authority and head of the Landesmedienanstalten network. The plan includes algorithmic favoritism for state-approved outlets, chat control proposals, and — this is the good part — mandatory digital IDs with biometric tracking. A first draft is expected by summer 2026.

Read that again. Mandatory digital IDs with biometric tracking to use social media. In Germany. In 2026.

Former State Department cyber official Mike Benz sounded the alarm on the leak, and he wasn't mincing words. "I can assure you 2 dozen other countries are watching closely to see if Germany can get away with it," Benz warned. He followed up with an even sharper point: "If no very visible retaliatory threat or diplomatic intervention is made here by USG, you will not believe the speed at which this cancer will spread."

He's right. This isn't just a German problem. It's a pilot program.

The European Union has already been road-testing this approach. The EU slapped X — Elon Musk's platform — with a €140 million fine under the EU Digital Services Act. The UK passed its Online Safety Act. France, under Emmanuel Macron, has been pushing its own speech controls. The EU even launched something called the "EU Democracy Shield," which sounds like it was named by the same people who called the Ministry of Truth a "Disinformation Governance Board."

And it's not just the continent. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been one of the loudest voices demanding platforms silence critics. The pattern is the same everywhere: label dissent as "disinformation," demand platforms suppress it, and fine them into oblivion if they don't comply.

What makes the German leak so devastating is the quiet part out loud. This isn't a government "requesting" cooperation from tech companies. This is a government drafting legally binding treaty language that would require platforms to amplify state media and bury independent voices. Algorithmically. By law.

These documents lay bare what we've been saying for years. Government-directed censorship in Western democracies isn't a conspiracy theory. It's policy.

Remember when the left spent four years shrieking that Trump was going to silence the press? He didn't. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, European governments are literally drafting laws to control what you see, what you read, and what you're allowed to say online — complete with biometric ID requirements so they know exactly who to punish. The rules for thee crowd strikes again, and this time they put it in writing.
