On Thursday, Trump announced there would be no third debate with Harris. In true Trumpian fashion, the former president took to social media to lay out his reasoning. “When a prizefighter loses a fight, the first words out of his mouth are, ‘I WANT A REMATCH,’” Trump wrote, comparing Harris to a defeated boxer. He went on to claim victory in the first debate, citing polls that supposedly favored him over “Comrade Kamala Harris,” as he dubbed her, and criticized both her and Joe Biden for their handling of the country. Trump’s base, already riled up by the moderators’ apparent bias, likely received this announcement with a sense of validation. Why should Trump agree to a third debate if the playing field is already uneven?
In true Trump style, he also noted that Harris had skipped debates hosted by Fox, NBC, and CBS, prompting him to ask why she wasn’t willing to face tough questions on those platforms. Harris’s focus on social issues like abortion and her prosecutorial background seemed to only irk Trump further, who closed his Tuesday remarks by questioning her lack of accomplishments in her current role. His blunt critique, delivered with a signature flair, was exactly the kind of punch his supporters love.
