Florida Democrat Stole $5 Million in FEMA Money Then Resigned ‘Moments Before’ the Ethics Committee Could Punish Her

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) resigned from Congress yesterday, and the timing was — how do we put this delicately — *absolutely hilarious.*

She didn’t resign last week. She didn’t resign over the weekend. She resigned *moments before* the House Ethics Committee sat down to decide her punishment. Moments! As in, the committee members were probably still pouring their coffee when someone walked in and said, “Uh, she’s gone.” Classic Democrat exit strategy: steal the money, get caught, then sprint for the door before anyone can lock it.

Let’s rewind a bit for anyone who missed this saga. Cherfilus-McCormick, her brother Edwin, a woman named Nadege Leblanc, and a tax preparer named David K. Spencer were federally indicted back in November 2025 for stealing $5 million in FEMA disaster relief funds. Five million dollars. Of money earmarked for people who lost their homes in hurricanes. She took it and used it to bankroll her congressional campaign.

(Read that again slowly. She stole hurricane relief money to buy herself a seat in Congress. And Democrats let her keep sitting in it for years.)

The FEMA overpayment hit in July 2021 — right when she was gearing up to run. What a coincidence! And the charges don’t stop at theft. We’re talking money laundering, illegal campaign contributions, and conspiracy to file false federal tax returns. It’s like a crime buffet. She went back for seconds at every station.

The House Ethics Committee charged her with 25 separate violations back in December 2024 and spent two years investigating. Two years! And last month, they found her guilty on all 25 counts. Every. Single. One.

So what does a woman facing 25 ethics violations and up to 53 years in federal prison do when the punishment phase rolls around? She resigns, of course. Moments before the gavel drops.

House Speaker Mike Johnson summed it up pretty well: “The facts are indisputable at this point, and so I believe it’ll be the consensus of this body that she should be expelled.” She apparently agreed — she just didn’t want to stick around for the expulsion part. Much more dignified to quit, right? Like a guy who gets fired and tells everyone he “decided to pursue other opportunities.”

Here’s what kills us about this whole thing. Remember when Republicans expelled George Santos? The media spent weeks hand-wringing about “precedent” and “the gravity of removing a sitting member.” Santos lied on his resume. Cherfilus-McCormick stole FIVE MILLION DOLLARS from hurricane victims and Democrats couldn’t even be bothered to push for her removal themselves.

Where was the outrage? Where were the CNN panels? Where was Hakeem Jeffries demanding accountability from his own caucus? Nowhere. Because when a Democrat steals disaster relief money, it’s a “developing story.” When a Republican fibs about his college volleyball career, it’s a “constitutional crisis.”

And let’s not forget — her brother Edwin is looking at up to 35 years. Leblanc faces 10 years. The tax preparer Spencer could get 33 years. This wasn’t a solo act. It was a family operation. The Cherfilus crime syndicate, running FEMA funds through the family like a money laundromat.

But sure, she resigned. How noble.

The federal criminal case is still very much alive, by the way. Resigning from Congress doesn’t make the indictment disappear. She didn’t escape — she just left the building. The courtroom is still waiting for her, and 53 years is a long time to think about all those hurricane victims whose money she pocketed.

We keep hearing Democrats lecture us about “defending democracy” and “protecting institutions.” Meanwhile, one of their own members stole disaster relief funds, got caught, got charged with 25 ethics violations, got found guilty on every single one — and their big move was to let her quietly resign before anyone had to vote on expelling her. That’s not defending democracy. That’s holding the door open so the thief can leave without making a scene.

At least she’s consistent. She stole $5 million and then stole herself an exit. Somewhere, a FEMA victim who lost their roof in a hurricane is watching this and wondering why their relief check never showed up.

Now we know where it went.
