Somewhere in Trenton, a newly minted governor just decided that the people risking their lives to enforce federal immigration law should do it with their faces hanging out for every radical with a camera phone and a grudge. What could possibly go wrong?
New Jersey Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed legislation this week that bans law enforcement — including ICE agents — from wearing masks during operations. Let that sink in. In an era where threats against federal agents have skyrocketed to levels that would make a Secret Service detail sweat, Sherrill thought the smart move was to strip away the one thing standing between these officers and a doxxing campaign.
The “Constitutional” Smokescreen
Sherrill, of course, wrapped the whole thing in a stars-and-stripes bow. In her statement, she declared:
“These bills underscore that here in New Jersey, we still follow the Constitution and uphold the rule of law.”
That’s rich. Following the Constitution by actively undermining federal law enforcement. Somebody get this woman a pocket-sized copy because she clearly skipped the Supremacy Clause.
She didn’t stop there, either. She took a swing at Trump’s ICE agents, calling them “untrained” and “unaccountable.”
“As we’ve seen across the country, Donald Trump’s untrained, unaccountable, masked ICE agents are putting people in danger,” she said.
Untrained? These are federal agents executing lawful warrants. But sure, Mikie, the real danger here is a face covering — not the violent criminals ICE is pulling off the streets.
The Quiet Part Out Loud
And here’s where it gets ugly. Sen. Tom Cotton didn’t mince words about what’s really driving this mask obsession among Democrats:
“Senate Democrats want to ban ICE officers from wearing masks so their left-wing street militias can dox the officers and terrorize the officers’ wives and children at their homes.”
Cotton said this on day 40 of the Senate battle over DHS funding, a partial government shutdown fueled in large part by Democrats demanding ICE “reforms” — and the mask ban sits right at the center of it. This isn’t about transparency. It’s about intimidation. They want names. They want faces. They want addresses. And they want the activist mob to do the rest.
DHS sees right through it. A spokesperson didn’t just push back — they torched the entire premise.
“Sanctuary politicians attempting to ban our federal law enforcement from wearing masks is despicable and a flagrant attempt to endanger our officers.”
The spokesperson went further, calling the law “irresponsible, reckless, and dangerous” and making clear that DHS will “not abide” by what it called an “unconstitutional ban.” They invoked the Supremacy Clause — the same part of the Constitution Sherrill pretended to be defending — to remind New Jersey that state politicians don’t get to run federal law enforcement.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
Here’s the part Sherrill doesn’t want you to hear. DHS laid out the threat landscape facing ICE agents: a more than 1,300 percent increase in assaults, a 3,300 percent increase in vehicular attacks, and — brace yourself — an 8,000 percent increase in death threats.
Eight. Thousand. Percent.
“ICE officers wear face coverings for one reason: to protect themselves and their families from real-world threats, including agitators,” DHS said. “The danger is not hypothetical.”
Not hypothetical. Real agents. Real families. Real threats. And Sherrill just told them all to smile for the camera.
Trump Won’t Blink
If there’s one thing we know about the Trump administration, it’s that they don’t fold when some blue-state governor tries to play constitutional scholar with a crayon. DHS has already said they won’t comply, and history tells us they mean it. Trump didn’t build the toughest immigration enforcement apparatus in modern history just to let Trenton blow it up with a performative stunt.
Expect this to land in federal court faster than you can say “preemption.” And expect New Jersey to lose.
Sherrill can grandstand all she wants. She can call ICE agents unaccountable from behind her security detail. She can pretend this is about civil liberties while painting targets on the backs of men and women who protect this country. But the federal government isn’t asking permission, and the Constitution she claims to love is going to be the very thing that buries this law.
Congratulations, Governor. You just made New Jersey the most dangerous state in America — for the people trying to keep it safe.
